Dancewear Changes With the Style of Dance

Different components go into creating the perfect dance performance. Having the correct dancewear items is essential to an excellent performance. The right uniform will allow for maximum flexibility as well as provide comfort. Practicing with similar attire allows dancers to become familiar with the restrictions and limitation their outfit will have. There are three main categories of dance attire for both practice and performance; leotards, unitards and separate tops and bottoms. In addition they type of attire you wear should reflect the type of dance you are performing.

When you think of traditional dance, often the first thing that comes to mind is Ballet. Ballet is one of the oldest forms of dance in the world. It requires dancers to complete difficult movements that require balance, strength, and grace. Ballet dancers usually choose to perform in tight and simple attire. This allows the audience to be drawn into the complex moments of the dancers. Elaborate costumes can detract from the dancer’s movements. In addition simply formed costumes will not get in the way of the dancer as they perform difficult routines. Tight costumes also help the performers maintain the flexibility they need for many ballet routines. Leotards are very commonly used for ballet dancers in performance and practice.

Jazz and hip-hop dance routines are both popular today. Often times the dancewear used for practice and performance in this style closely resembles street clothes; t shirts and baggy pants. The movements of this style of dance often require for the entire dance team to move their bodies in unison so they appear to be moving as a whole during their performance. Jazz and hip hop costumes range in style; from simple to complex, and from tight to baggy. Usually costumes for this style are flashy and eye catching so the audience is drawn into the performance.

Another popular style is lyrical dance. It is similar to ballet because its movements are often slow and graceful; however it is less complex and uses much of the body to create elaborate routines.

Lyrical dancewear is simple in design. It incorporates light colors and simple attire. However many lyrical costumes also have elaborate streaming fabric that follows the movements of the dancers. This helps the moves appear larger, and attracts the attention of the audience. Lyrical costumes are long and gown like.
